Our history
From short city trips to half-day adventures – all our tours are private, flexible, and full of stories.

Claudia, a rickshaw, and an idea that changed Salzburg.
What started small became a movement with people, stories, and encounters on the streets of the old town.
Today, Rikschatours is smaller, more personal, and part of something bigger.
Here we tell how it all began. And why we still exist.
From the first rickshaw to today
How it all Began and where It's Going
Rikschatours was founded in 2009, with only one rickshaw at the time. Since then, a lot has happened: the team grew, friendships were formed, new drivers came, others left.
This little timeline shows how a spontaneous idea became a Salzburg original and why we continue to do it.
- 2009
Claudia Takes Off
Claudia founded Rikschatours with a single rickshaw and a lot of conviction.
She drives through Salzburg alone and promotes the project with charm and muscle power.
- 2010
The First Team
For the first time, a small team is formed.
Claudia brings in friends and acquaintances – and the idea becomes a real summer project.
- 2012
Change & WIKARUS
A completely new team is formed and with it a new kind of community.
In this year, Gerhard also finds his way to the rickshaw via a student ad without knowing how much it will shape his life.
In addition, under Claudia’s leadership, Rikschatours wins 1st place at the WIKARUS Start-up Prize (Wirtschaftskammer contribution on YouTube).
- 2013–2017
Rickshaw as a Way of Life
The summers roll by. New drivers come, others go.
But the spirit remains: self-determined, local, a little crazy and always close to the people.
- 2018
Jonas Takes Over
Jonas takes over the project and continues it.
Meanwhile, Gerhard starts with the Free Walking Tour Salzburg and also has his hands full.
- 2020
Pandemic Break
Standstill. 2020 brings everything to a standstill.
Claudia and Jonas quit and hand over Rikschatours to Gerhard.
- 2021–2025
Break with a Plan
Rikschatours remains on pause for the time being.
Gerhard takes care of other projects, but the idea lives on in the background.
- 2026
The Next round Begins
The rickshaw original returns, smaller, clearer and with a new focus.
The next ride is not far away.

What Has Changed at Rikschatours

We used to be many. Many rickshaws, many drivers, many encounters on the street.
Today we are smaller with a few, well-selected drivers and a clear decision to let the project live on.
It is still a personal project. For us, for you, for Salzburg.
The project is now led by licensed Austria Guides. Some tours are now led by licensed Austria Guides, some are not.
The city no longer gives us a fixed location. And to be honest: We no longer have the time to just wait. Because we don’t wait anymore. We prefer to tell stories.
We no longer start spontaneously, but only on reservation.
Why do rickshaw tours still exist at all?
Because rickshaw tours are a part of us.
Because Claudia has entrusted us with her project.
And because we would simply think it a pity if it disappeared.
Today we are smaller. But we are also part of something bigger: a family of projects under the umbrella of Introducing Salzburg.

Today we are part of a larger family.
Discover more of Us
Over the years, a small network has emerged from Rikschatours. It all started in 2018, when Gerhard founded the Free Walking Tour Salzburg in his last year as a rickshaw driver.
Then came new ideas, new faces and new paths.
In 2022, Rikschatours also became part of this family.
Today, all these projects live under one roof: Introducing Salzburg. What connects them? Personal stories and real proximity to the city.
