Castles & Hidden Treasures
A three-hour discovery tour to Salzburg's historic castles, hidden places and local stories, perfect for repeat visitors and fans of Salzburg's culture and history.
This tour takes you out of the old town and into the quiet, elegant, often overlooked Salzburg.
The route is identical to our Round of Music Tour, but the experience is different.
Instead of talking about film scenes, we talk about urban development, green retreats, prince-archiepiscopal castles and quiet places along the way.
In three hours, you will discover with us not only Leopoldskron Palace, Hellbrunn and the most beautiful avenues in the city, but also the small details in between: a panoramic view of the Untersberg. Milk directly from the farmer. A municipal cemetery with stories that almost nobody knows.
This tour is ideal for anyone who already knows Salzburg a little or simply wants to experience something special for half a day, away from the usual paths, but right in the middle of the real Salzburg.
Which Places We Explore on this Tour
As with all our tours, the Castles & Hidden Treasures Tour also likes to start at Residenzplatz. From there we cross the old town, past Universitätsplatz, Pferdeschwemme, Festspielhaus and Dom.
This part corresponds to our Tour Deluxe and creates the perfect basis for what comes next: a relaxed drive out into the green surroundings of Salzburg.
We drive along the Salzach River to the south, take a distant look at Nonnberg Abbey, one of the oldest continuously inhabited women’s abbeys in the world, and finally turn into Hellbrunner Allee.
The kilometer-long avenue is one of the most beautiful of its kind in Europe and connects Salzburg with Hellbrunn Palace.
Here we drive past old estates, stately villas and small farms, discover quiet views of the Untersberg and, on request, are happy to stop for a photo or even for fresh milk directly from the milk vending machine on the farm.
Shortly before Hellbrunn Palace, we reach Schloss Frohnburg, once the summer residence of the archbishops, today quiet and hidden on the edge of the avenue. At the end of the avenue, the baroque Hellbrunn Palace awaits with its gardens, ponds and the famous pavilion, this time not as a film scene, but as a real place with real history.
On the way back, we drive past the Kommunalfriedhof, Salzburg’s counterpart to the Vienna Central Cemetery. If you like, you can make a short stop here. Many of our guests find this place particularly impressive.
Finally, we go to Leopoldskron, where the palace of the same name is reflected on the banks of the Weiher, one of the most peaceful places in the city, with a view of water, forest and mountains.
Why Guests Love this Tour
This tour is a real eye-opener for many guests. Not because it ticks off major sights – but because it shows Salzburg as you rarely experience it: quiet, spacious, surprisingly green.
You drive through avenues, past castles, see cows, villas, hills and water and are still in the city.
Especially those who have already visited Salzburg are often amazed at how much more there is to discover outside the old town.
The atmosphere is different from our shorter tours: less dense, but more open, airy, relaxed.
Nevertheless, everything remains personal, direct and close. You determine the pace, can stop, ask, look or simply enjoy at any time.
Many say at the end: “I never thought Salzburg could be so big and yet so quiet.”

Who this Tour is Ideal For
This tour is ideal for anyone who wants to experience Salzburg in all its diversity, away from the usual old town paths, but without sacrificing comfort and good stories.
It is aimed particularly at guests who do not come to Salzburg because of the Sound of Music or perhaps do not know the film at all or consciously seek a thematically neutral alternative to the Round of Music.
The route is the same, but the focus here is on nature, urban development, history and atmosphere, not on film scenes.
You see the same castles, avenues and ponds, but get a completely different experience.
So if you already know Salzburg a little, have a little more time and are interested in the wide, real, beautiful Salzburg outside the old town, this tour is just right.
If you do get curious about the filming locations and the stories behind them, then take a look at our Round of Music. It travels on the same route, but with a completely different perspective.
And if it should only be the old town in one hour, take a look at the Tour Deluxe.
